Technology Advice for Base Schools

As outlined on the Technology & Facilities page, the basic requirements for a FisherONE student are:

  • A stable and reliable Internet connection
  • A suitable laptop
  • A webcam
  • A microphone
The primary software tools used are Microsoft Teams, OneNote and a range of web-based tools from Microsoft and other providers. Base schools should ensure that Teams and OneNote are available on student devices.

Addressing some frequently asked questions from base schools

Is the in-built webcam and microphone sufficient?

In many instances, yes. However, if multiple students are in the same location participating in live lessons, this can become problematic and a headset of some form that incorporates a microphone is beneficial.

Our school blocks use of the webcam on student devices. Is this a problem?

FisherONE live lessons are generally collaborative and interactive. To ensure students have a quality learning experience, it is required for them to be seen and, when appropriate, contribute to the lesson by speaking. If base schools can place their FisherONE students and/or their devices in a group, or apply a profile which has permissions to allow use of these device features, this will enhance the student experience.

Will students need to install additional software?

In many subjects, Teams, OneNote and some web-based tools will be all the is required. However, some subjects will require students to install specialist software tools. For these subjects, the documents below provide specific details. Teachers of these stubjects will communicate these requirements to students and base school leaders well in advance of them being required. Most of this software is free. Where this is not the case, all licensing costs will be covered by FisherONE.

What if a website a student needs is blocked by the school?

All third-party websites and services used by FisherONE are subject to the Brisbane Catholic Education Due Diligence process and undergo a risk assessment before they are used. If required, the subject teacher will make a request through the base school leader to have a specific website/service unblocked for FisherONE students.
